Slips, trips and falls are the leading causes of accidents in all sectors of activity, from heavy industry to white-collar work.

In the member states of the European Union they have been found to be the leading cause of accidents resulting in sick leave of more than 3 days. Accident risks are higher in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), especially those with fewer than 50 employees. Using simple control measures can reduce the risk of slip and trip injuries.

Good practices at work to avoid these accidents

Often, simple but effective steps can be taken to reduce or eliminate slip and trip hazards. To do this, we will consider the following preventive measures.

ORDER: Poor housekeeping and general clutter are a major cause of slips and trips. Keep the work environment clean and orderly.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE: Regular cleaning and maintenance will reduce risks to a minimum. Debris must be regularly removed and work areas kept clear

LIGHTING: It is necessary to guarantee adequate lighting levels and that the operation and position of the lights uniformly illuminate all areas of the floor, as well as all potential hazards.

PAVEMENTS: It is necessary to periodically check the existence of damages in the floor and, when necessary, carry out maintenance tasks.

STAIRS: Many accidents occur on the stairs. Handrails, anti-slip coatings on steps, marking the front edge of steps with a high-visibility, slip-resistant coating as well as adequate lighting are all elements that serve to prevent slipping and tripping on stairs.

LIQUID SPILLS: Must be cleaned up immediately using an appropriate cleaning method (chemical treatment may be required). Use warning signs when the ground is wet and organize alternative routes.

CABLES ON THE GROUND: Place the equipment so that the cables do not cross the paths of pedestrian traffic. Use cable wraps to keep cables securely attached to surfaces.

FOOTWEAR: Workers need appropriate footwear for their work environment. It is necessary to take into account the type of work, the surface of the floor, the usual conditions of the floor and the anti-slip properties of the soles of the footwear.

OUTDOOR WORKPLACES: In outdoor workplaces, the risk of slipping or tripping must be minimized, with non-slip measures when there is frost with the appropriate footwear.
